Statues As a Staple of Classic Art in Archaic Greece The initial freestanding sculpture was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are known as kouros figures. The kouroi, regarded by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot extended out of a fixed forward-facing pose and the male statues were regularly unclothed, with a strong, powerful build.
Around 650 BC, life-sized forms of the kouroi began to be observed. Throughout the Archaic period, a big time of changes, the Greeks were developing new sorts of government, expressions of art, and a larger awareness of people and cultures outside Greece.
