The Original Outdoor Public Fountains
The Original Outdoor Public Fountains
Water fountains were originally practical in purpose, used to deliver water from canals or creeks to towns and hamlets, supplying the inhabitants with clean water to drink, bathe, and cook with. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the flow and send water spraying from the fountain's spout, a technology without equal until the late nineteenth century. Inspirational and impressive, big water fountains have been built as memorials in nearly all cultures. The contemporary fountains of today bear little likeness to the very first water fountains. Simple stone basins crafted from nearby rock were the very first fountains, used for spiritual ceremonies and drinking water. Stone basins are theorized to have been 1st used around 2,000 BC. The spray of water emerging from small spouts was pressured by gravity, the lone power source designers had in those days. These historic water fountains were designed to be functional, commonly situated along aqueducts, streams and rivers to supply drinking water. Fountains with ornate decoration began to show up in Rome in approx. 6 B.C., usually gods and wildlife, made with stone or bronze. A well-designed collection of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public fountains supplied with fresh water.
