Water Transport Solutions in Historic Rome Prior to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Rome, citizens who dwelled on hillsides had to go even further down to get their water from natural sources.
If citizens residing at higher elevations did not have accessibility to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to depend on the remaining existing systems of the day, cisterns that accumulated rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that drew the water from below ground. In the early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to provide drinking water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. While these manholes were created to make it much easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to extract water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. He didn’t get enough water from the cistern that he had established on his residential property to obtain rainwater. That is when he decided to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his property.
