Statues As a Staple of Vintage Art in Historic Greece
Statues As a Staple of Vintage Art in Historic Greece The Archaic Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks.
The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and unclothed. The kouroi started to be life-sized starting in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an awesome time of transformation for the Greeks as they extended into new forms of government, formed novel expressions of art, and achieved insights of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. Still, these battles did little to hamper the progress of the Greek civilization.
When and Where Did Water Fountains Originate?
When and Where Did Water Fountains Originate? Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek documents into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to make it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was restored starting in 1453. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area previously filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. Changes and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
