Gian Bernini's Outdoor Fountains
Gian Bernini's Outdoor Fountains There are countless famous water features in the city center of Rome. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the most brilliant sculptors and artists of the 17th century developed, conceptualized and constructed virtually all of them. He was furthermore a urban architect, in addition to his skills as a water fountain designer, and remnants of his life's work are evident throughout the streets of Rome. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. An exceptional workman, Bernin earned praise and the patronage of popes and important painters.
He was initially renowned for his sculpture. Working gracefully with Roman marble, he made use of a base of knowledge in the classic Greek architecture, most famously in the Vatican. He was influenced by many great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest impact on his work.
Water Transport Solutions in Historic Rome
Water Transport Solutions in Historic Rome Previous to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Roma, citizens who dwelled on hillsides had to journey further down to gather their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people dwelling at raised elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. Starting in the sixteenth century, a new strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to supply water to Pincian Hill. Through its original construction, pozzi (or manholes) were placed at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. The manholes made it easier to thoroughly clean the channel, but it was also possible to use buckets to extract water from the aqueduct, as we witnessed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he possessed the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to satisfy his needs. To give himself with a much more efficient way to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened, providing him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
