Statuary As a Staple of Classic Art in Historic Greece
Statuary As a Staple of Classic Art in Historic Greece The initial freestanding statuary was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and undressing. In about 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they progressed into more sophisticated forms of government and art, and acquired more information about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece. Equivalent to other periods of historical unrest, disputes were common, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos. The Distribution of Outdoor Garden Fountain Industrial Knowledge in Europe

The circulated reports and illustrated publications of the time contributed to the evolution of scientific innovation, and were the chief methods of spreading useful hydraulic concepts and water fountain suggestions all through Europe. In the later part of the 1500's, a French water feature architect (whose name has been lost) was the globally renowned hydraulics innovator. By designing landscapes and grottoes with incorporated and clever water features, he began his profession in Italy by receiving imperial commissions in Brussels, London and Germany. The text, “The Principles of Moving Forces,” authored near the end of his life in France, turned out to be the definitive writing on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Replacing vital hydraulic discoveries of classical antiquity, the publication also details modern hydraulic technologies. Archimedes, the creator of the water screw, had his work showcased and these integrated a mechanized means to move water. Sunlight warming water in a pair of containers unseen in a room adjacent to an decorative water fountain was shown in one illustration. The end result: the water feature is activated by the hot liquid expanding and ascending up the piping. Concepts for pumps, water wheels, water features and outdoor ponds are also mentioned in the book.
