"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary The primitive Greeks built the 1st freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, statues of adolescent, good-looking male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures.
Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to appear stiff and commonly had foot forward; the males were healthy, powerful, and nude. In about 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more polished forms of federal government and art, and obtained more data about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. Similar to many other times of historical conflict, disputes were common, and there were battles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
