Striking and spectacular, prominent water fountains have been designed as memorials in most cultures. Rough in design, the first water fountains did not appear much like contemporary fountains. Designed for drinking water and ceremonial reasons, the initial fountains were simple carved stone basins. 2,000 B.C. is when the oldest known stone fountain basins were actually used. The spray of water appearing from small jets was pushed by gravity, the only power source creators had in those days. Fountains with ornate decoration began to show up in Rome in approx. 6 B.C., normally gods and creatures, made with natural stone or copper-base alloy. The people of Rome had an intricate system of aqueducts that provided the water for the many fountains that were situated throughout the community.
