Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons encountered great changes to their daily lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans.Anglo-Saxon Landscapes Time Norman Conquest 410316300639243.jpg At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But the Normans had to pacify the overall territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were enormous stone structures built in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on understanding offensive and defensive strategies. Peaceful pastimes such as gardening were out of place in these destitute citadels. Berkeley Castle is possibly the most unchanged model in existence at present of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an impediment to assailants wanting to dig under the castle walls. On 1 of these terraces lies a stylish bowling green: it's covered in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is created into the shape of rough ramparts.

Archaic Greek Art: Garden Statuary

Archaic Greek Art: Garden Statuary Archaic Greeks were renowned for creating the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, considered by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot stretched out of a fixed forward-facing posture and the male statues were regularly unclothed, with a compelling, sturdy build. The kouroi became life-sized commencing in 650 BC. During the Archaic time, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new types of government, expressions of art, and a larger understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. Still, these conflicts did little to hinder the progression of the Greek civilization.
