"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary

"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary The first freestanding sculpture was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished accomplishment since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and unclothed. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an incredible point of change for the Greeks as they grew into new modes of government, produced unique expressions of art, and achieved information of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian battles, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the sorts of clashes that arose frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical transformation.

Modern Garden Decor: Fountains and their Beginnings

Modern Garden Decor: Fountains and their Beginnings The amazing or decorative effect of a fountain is just one of the purposes it fulfills, as well as delivering drinking water and adding a decorative touch to your property.

The primary purpose of a fountain was originally strictly functional. Residents of urban areas, townships and small towns used them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash, which meant that fountains needed to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Until the late 19th, century most water fountains operated using the force of gravity to allow water to flow or jet into the air, therefore, they needed a source of water such as a reservoir or aqueduct located higher than the fountain. Designers thought of fountains as amazing additions to a living space, however, the fountains also served to provide clean water and celebrate the designer responsible for building it. The main components used by the Romans to create their fountains were bronze or stone masks, mostly depicting animals or heroes. During the Middle Ages, Muslim and Moorish garden designers included fountains in their designs to mimic the gardens of paradise. The fountains found in the Gardens of Versailles were meant to show the power over nature held by King Louis XIV of France. The Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries were glorified with baroque style fountains built to mark the place of entry of Roman aqueducts.

The end of the 19th century saw the increase in usage of indoor plumbing to provide drinking water, so urban fountains were relegated to strictly decorative elements.Modern Garden Decor: Fountains Beginnings 174756294960964011.jpg Amazing water effects and recycled water were made possible by replacing the force of gravity with mechanical pumps.

Modern-day fountains serve mostly as decoration for community spaces, to honor individuals or events, and compliment entertainment and recreational activities.
