The Source of Today's Garden Fountains

The Source of Today's Garden Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope instigated the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman tradition of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Changes and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Gian Bernini's Garden Fountains

Gian Bernini's Garden Fountains In Rome’s city center, there are countless celebrated water features.Gian Bernini's Garden Fountains 76477679.jpg Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century designed, conceived and built nearly all of them. He was also a city architect, in addition to his skills as a fountain developer, and remnants of his life's work are evident throughout the streets of Rome. Ultimately travelling to Rome to fully express their artwork, chiefly in the form of community water features, Bernini’s father, a famed Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son. An excellent employee, the young Bernini received praise and patronage of many popes and important artists. Originally he was renowned for his sculpting skills. Most particularly in the Vatican, he used a base of experience in historical Greek architecture and melded it flawlessly with Roman marble. He was influenced by many great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest impact on his work.

A Short History of the Early Outdoor Water Features

A Short History of the Early Outdoor Water Features Towns and villages relied on working water fountains to funnel water for preparing food, washing, and cleaning up from local sources like lakes, channels, or creeks.Short History Early Outdoor Water Features 12159468003802.jpg The force of gravity was the power supply of water fountains up until the close of the nineteenth century, using the forceful power of water traveling down hill from a spring or brook to force the water through spigots or other outlets. Commonly used as memorials and commemorative structures, water fountains have inspired people from all over the world throughout the centuries. When you see a fountain at present, that is certainly not what the 1st water fountains looked like. The first known water fountain was a natural stone basin carved that was used as a receptacle for drinking water and ceremonial purposes. 2000 B.C. is when the oldest identified stone fountain basins were actually used. The very first civilizations that made use of fountains relied on gravity to force water through spigots. Drinking water was provided by public fountains, long before fountains became ornate public monuments, as pretty as they are practical. Fountains with elaborate decoration started to appear in Rome in approximately 6 BC, commonly gods and animals, made with stone or bronze. Water for the communal fountains of Rome was brought to the city via a intricate system of water aqueducts.
