Early Water Supply Solutions in Rome
Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, started out delivering the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, although they had depended on natural springs up till then. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people dwelling at raised elevations turned to water removed from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by way of the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. Pozzi, or manholes, were made at regular intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were provided to make it less difficult to manage the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was carried out by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. The cistern he had built to gather rainwater wasn’t adequate to meet his water specifications. To provide himself with a much more effective means to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened up, providing him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
