Rome’s Ingenious Water Transport Systems
Rome’s Ingenious Water Transport Systems Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural creeks for their water. Throughout this time period, there were only two other techniques capable of offering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. To provide water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they implemented the emerging method of redirecting the circulation from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. During its original construction, pozzi (or manholes) were added at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. Although they were primarily manufactured to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started out using the manholes to gather water from the channel, opening when he obtained the property in 1543. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to meet his needs.
That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his residence.
Bernini's First Masterpieces
Bernini's First Masterpieces One can see Bernini's earliest masterpiece, the Barcaccia water fountain, at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, you will find Roman residents and vacation goers occupying this area to revel in chit chatter and being among other people. The streets neighboring his fountain have come to be one of the city’s most trendy meeting places, something which would certainly have pleased Bernini himself. In about 1630, the great artist built the very first water fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. Illustrated in the fountain's design is a great vessel gradually sinking into the Mediterranean Sea.
Period writings dating back to the 16th century show that the fountain was built as a monument to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. In what became his one and only extended absence from Italy, Bernini {journeyed | traveled] to France in 1665.
