Anglo-Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest
Anglo-Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the later half of the 11th century greatly altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But the Normans had to pacify the entire territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Monasteries and castles served separate functions, so while monasteries were enormous stone structures assembled in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the occupants focused on understanding offensive and defensive strategies. Gardening, a placid occupation, was unfeasible in these unproductive fortifications. Berkeley Castle, potentially the most pristine style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists in the present day. It is said that the keep was introduced during William the Conqueror's time. A big terrace meant for walking and as a means to stop enemies from mining below the walls runs about the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and surrounded by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.
