The First Modern Wall Fountains The translation of hundreds of classical Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 till 1455. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his ambitions. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had transported fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental celebratory fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a practice which was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.Keep Your Outdoor Water fountain Clean
Keep Your Outdoor Water fountain Clean To ensure that water fountains last a while, it is important to perform regular maintenance. A typical issue with fountains is that they tend to collect dirt and debris, so it is essential that you keep it free from this.
Additionally, anywhere light from the sun comes in contact with still water, algae can develop. Either sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar can be blended into the water to prevent this problem. Bleach can also be dissolved into the water, but this is not an ideal option as it can harm birds or other animals. No more than three-four months should really go by without an extensive cleansing of a fountain. The initial task is to get rid of all the water. Then use a soft rag and mild cleanser to scrub the inside. If there is delicate artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Do not leave any soap deposit inside or on the fountain.
Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and cleaning the inside thoroughly. To make it less challenging, soak it in vinegar for a while before cleaning. Mineral or rain water, versus tap water, is ideal in order to avoid any build-up of chemicals inside the pump.
Lastly, make sure your fountain is always full by checking it every day - this will keep it in tip-top condition. If the water level falls below the pump’s intake level, it can hurt the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!
