Contemporary Garden Decoration: Large Outdoor Water Fountains and their Roots

The main purpose of a fountain was originally strictly practical. Water fountains were connected to a spring or aqueduct to supply drinkable water as well as bathing water for cities, townships and villages. Used until the 19th century, in order for fountains to flow or shoot up into the air, their origin of water such as reservoirs or aqueducts, had to be higher than the water fountain in order to benefit from gravity. Fountains were an excellent source of water, and also served to adorn living areas and celebrate the designer. Bronze or stone masks of wildlife and heroes were commonly seen on Roman fountains. Muslims and Moorish garden designers of the Middle Ages included fountains to re-create smaller versions of the gardens of paradise. Fountains enjoyed a significant role in the Gardens of Versailles, all part of French King Louis XIV’s desire to exert his power over nature. Seventeen and 18 century Popes sought to laud their positions by adding beautiful baroque-style fountains at the point where restored Roman aqueducts arrived into the city.

Since indoor plumbing became the norm of the day for clean, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely ornamental. The introduction of special water effects and the recycling of water were two things made possible by swapping gravity with mechanical pumps.

Embellishing city parks, honoring people or events and entertaining, are some of the functions of modern-day fountains.

The Countless Styles of Wall Fountains

Depending on your needs, you can select from mounted or freestanding models. Small, self-contained mounted wall fountains can be installed on any surface. Fountains of this type need to be light, therefore, they are typically fabricated from resin (resembling stone) or fiberglass. Large-sized free-standing wall fountains, often referred to as floor fountains, have their basins positioned on the floor and a smooth side leaning on a wall. Typically made of cast stone, this style of water feature is not restricted in weight.

Landscape designers often recommend a customized fountain for a brand new or existing wall. The basin and all the required plumbing are best installed by a qualified mason. It is also essential to include a spout or fountain mask to build it into the wall. Custom-built wall fountains lend to a unified look because they become part of the landscape rather than look like a later addition.
