The Hellenic Republic: Architectural Statuary

Hellenic Republic: Architectural Statuary 933399284.jpg The Hellenic Republic: Architectural Statuary Nearly all sculptors were paid by the temples to enhance the intricate columns and archways with renderings of the gods until the time period came to a close and many Greeks started to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more typical for sculptors to represent ordinary men and women as well. Wealthy families would often times commission a rendition of their forefathers for their large familial tombs; portraiture additionally became common and would be appropriated by the Romans upon their acquisition of Greek society. A point of artistic progression, the use of sculpture and alternate art forms transformed through the Greek Classical period, so it is inexact to assume that the arts served only one function. Whether to satisfy a visual craving or to commemorate the figures of religion, Greek sculpture was actually an artistic practice in the ancient world, which could be what attracts our attention today.

Anglo Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest

Anglo Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons experienced great changes to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. The ability of the Normans exceeded the Anglo-Saxons' in design and agriculture at the time of the conquest. However the Normans had to pacify the whole territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Monasteries and castles served different functions, so while monasteries were large stone structures assembled in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the occupants focused on learning offensive and defensive strategies. The barren fortresses did not provide for the peaceful avocation of gardening. Berkeley Castle is possibly the most intact model in existence at present of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is reported to have been conceived during the time of William the Conqueror. A significant terrace serves as a hindrance to invaders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. A scenic bowling green, covered in grass and enclosed by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.
