Rome’s Early Water Transport Systems

Rome’s Early Water Transport Systems 2115083976235379701.jpg Rome’s Early Water Transport Systems Previous to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Roma, residents who resided on hillsides had to travel further down to collect their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technological innovations obtainable at the time to supply water to locations of high elevation. In the very early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed below the ground through Acqua Vergine to furnish drinking water to Pincian Hill. The aqueduct’s channel was made attainable by pozzi, or manholes, that were installed along its length when it was initially built. During the roughly nine years he had the residential property, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi employed these manholes to take water from the channel in containers, though they were previously built for the intent of maintaining and servicing the aqueduct. The cistern he had built to obtain rainwater wasn’t satisfactory to meet his water specifications. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his property.
