The Impact of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Gardens
The Impact of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Gardens The arrival of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century irreparably transformed The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle.
Engineering and horticulture were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But the Normans had to pacify the entire territory before they could concentrate on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Most often constructed upon windy summits, castles were straightforward structures that permitted their inhabitants to spend time and space to offensive and defensive schemes, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings commonly added in only the most fecund, extensive valleys. Gardening, a placid occupation, was unfeasible in these fruitless fortifications. Berkeley Castle, potentially the most pristine style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. It is said that the keep was introduced during William the Conqueror's time. As a method of deterring assailants from tunneling underneath the walls, an immense terrace encompasses the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an old yew hedge cut into the figure of crude battlements.
The Root of Modern Outdoor Wall Fountains
The Root of Modern Outdoor Wall Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classical Greek texts into Latin. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his objectives. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a damaged aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was restored starting in 1453. The ancient Roman custom of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. The water which eventually furnished the Trevi Fountain as well as the renown baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona came from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
