Archaic Greek Artistry: Garden Statuary Archaic Greeks were known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to look stiff and typically had foot in front; the males were healthy, robust, and naked. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of change, the Greeks were developing new forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. But in spite of the conflicts, the Greek civilization continued to advance, unabated.
