Archaic Greek Artwork: Large Statuary The initial freestanding statuary was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable success since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars.
Kouros figures, sculptures of adolescent, good-looking male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. Considered by Greeks to embody skin care, the kouroi were structured into firm, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, well-developed, and fit. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC.
