Statuary As a Staple of Vintage Art in Historic Greece
Statuary As a Staple of Vintage Art in Historic Greece The Archaic Greeks manufactured the 1st freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars.
Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are known as kouros figures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to appear rigid and typically had foot forward; the males were vigorous, robust, and naked. The kouroi started to be life-sized starting in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic time, a great time of change, the Greeks were developing new types of government, expressions of art, and a deeper understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. The Arcadian battles, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are examples of the sorts of battles that arose frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
The History of Fountains
The History of Fountains Hundreds of classic Greek records were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope resolved to enhance the beauty of the city. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman tradition of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an magnificent celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The water which eventually provided the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of hundreds of age-old documents from their original Greek into Latin....
