Original Water Delivery Techniques in Rome Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Roma, inhabitants who dwelled on hillsides had to go further down to collect their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole techniques around at the time to supply water to areas of higher elevation. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill through the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals.
