The Root of Contemporary Outdoor Wall Fountains
The Root of Contemporary Outdoor Wall Fountains
Hundreds of ancient Greek texts were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope resolved to enhance the beauty of the city. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent repair at the behest of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a practice which was revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The water which eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain as well as the acclaimed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Troubles
Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Troubles Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Rome, inhabitants who lived on hills had to journey further down to collect their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people living at higher elevations turned to water removed from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill through the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. Spanning the length of the aqueduct’s network were pozzi, or manholes, that gave access. While these manholes were created to make it much easier to sustain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Even though the cardinal also had a cistern to accumulate rainwater, it couldn't supply a sufficient amount of water. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his residence.
