Bernini’s First Italian Water Fountains The Barcaccia, Bernini's very first water fountain, is a striking chef d'oeuvre built at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, this area is filled with Roman locals and tourists alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company.
One of the city’s most fashionable meeting places are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would certainly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. In around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII helped Bernini launch his career with the construction of his very first water fountain. Illustrated in the fountain's design is a great vessel slowly sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. According to 16th century texts, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was commemorated by the eye-catching fountain. In 1665 Bernini journeyed to France, in what was to be his only extended absence from Italy.

Water Transport Strategies in Ancient Rome Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, started delivering the many people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had depended on natural springs up until then. Throughout this period, there were only 2 other systems capable of offering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by way of the underground channel of Acqua Vergine.
Pozzi, or manholes, were built at regular intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. During the some nine years he had the residential property, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi employed these manholes to take water from the channel in buckets, though they were actually established for the objective of cleaning and maintaining the aqueduct. He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had built on his property to collect rainwater. To provide himself with a more efficient system to gather water, he had one of the manholes opened up, offering him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
