Rome’s First Water Transport Solutions

Rome’s First Water Transport Solutions Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, started off providing the people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, even though they had counted on natural springs up till then. Throughout this period, there were only two other systems capable of delivering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater. Starting in the sixteenth century, a newer method was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to generate water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. While these manholes were manufactured to make it much easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to extract water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his death in 1552.Rome’s First Water Transport Solutions 7813971146289659228.jpg The cistern he had built to collect rainwater wasn’t satisfactory to meet his water requirements.
