Sculpture As a Staple of Vintage Art in Archaic Greece The Archaic Greeks developed the 1st freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to look stiff and typically had foot in front; the males were healthy, sturdy, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they progressed into more refined forms of federal government and art, and acquired more data about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. However, these conflicts did little to impede the advancement of the Greek civilization.

In about 1630, the great master designed the first water fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. Illustrated in the fountain's design is a large vessel gradually sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. The great flooding of the Tevere that blanketed the whole region with water in the 16th was commemorated by this momentous fountain as recorded by reports dating back to this period. In 1665 Bernini journeyed to France, in what was to be his only extended absence from Italy.
