Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Challenges Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, commenced delivering the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, even though they had depended on natural springs up till then. Throughout this period, there were only two other technologies capable of offering water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. In the early sixteenth century, the city began to use the water that flowed beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to supply water to Pincian Hill.
The aqueduct’s channel was made attainable by pozzi, or manholes, that were positioned along its length when it was 1st designed. While these manholes were developed to make it much easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. The cistern he had made to gather rainwater wasn’t satisfactory to meet his water specifications. To provide himself with a more streamlined system to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened up, giving him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
