The central purpose of a fountain was originally strictly functional. Inhabitants of cities, townships and small towns used them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash up, which meant that fountains needed to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Used until the nineteenth century, in order for fountains to flow or shoot up into the air, their origin of water such as reservoirs or aqueducts, had to be higher than the water fountain in order to benefit from gravity. Serving as an element of decoration and celebration, fountains also generated clean, fresh drinking water. Animals or heroes made of bronze or stone masks were often times used by Romans to decorate their fountains. To illustrate the gardens of paradise, Muslim and Moorish garden planners of the Middle Ages introduced fountains to their designs. The fountains found in the Gardens of Versailles were supposed to show the power over nature held by King Louis XIV of France. To mark the entrance of the restored Roman aqueducts, the Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries commissioned the building of baroque style fountains in the spot where the aqueducts arrived in the city of Rome

Indoor plumbing became the key source of water by the end of the 19th century thereby restricting urban fountains to mere decorative elements. Fountains using mechanical pumps instead of gravity helped fountains to provide recycled water into living spaces as well as create special water effects.

Embellishing city parks, honoring people or events and entertaining, are some of the purposes of modern-day fountains.

The Outcome of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Landscaping

The Outcome of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Landscaping The advent of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century significantly modified The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. The skill of the Normans exceeded the Anglo-Saxons' in architecture and farming at the time of the conquest. However, there was no time for home life, domestic architecture, and decoration until the Normans had overcome the whole realm. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were massive stone structures built in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on learning offensive and defensive practices. Peaceful pursuits such as gardening were out of place in these destitute citadels. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is depicted in Berkeley Castle, which is perhaps the most untouched sample we have. It is said that the keep was introduced during William the Conqueror's time. A large terrace recommended for exercising and as a way to stop enemies from mining below the walls runs about the building. A picturesque bowling green, covered in grass and surrounded by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.
