Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to appear stiff and always had foot forward; the males were vigorous, robust, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an awesome point of change for the Greeks as they expanded into new forms of government, formed novel expressions of art, and achieved knowledge of the people and cultures outside of Greece. However, these conflicts did little to hamper the progression of the Greek civilization.
