Water Delivery Strategies in Ancient Rome
Water Delivery Strategies in Ancient Rome Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Roma, inhabitants who dwelled on hillsides had to travel even further down to get their water from natural sources.
If inhabitants residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to be dependent on the remaining existing technologies of the day, cisterns that collected rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground. In the early 16th century, the city began to use the water that ran beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to deliver water to Pincian Hill. The aqueduct’s channel was made available by pozzi, or manholes, that were installed along its length when it was 1st created. While these manholes were created to make it easier to sustain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Whilst the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it couldn't produce sufficient water. To provide himself with a more useful way to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened, providing him access to the aqueduct below his property.
