Characteristics of Outdoor Statuary in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were known for creating the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were formed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and desirable male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male statues were regularly undressed, with a compelling, sturdy shape. In around 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized.
