Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Troubles
Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Troubles Rome’s very first raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants residing at higher elevations had to depend on natural springs for their water. If people residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to depend on the other existing solutions of the time, cisterns that collected rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground.
In the early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed underground through Acqua Vergine to provide water to Pincian Hill. During its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were located at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. During the some nine years he owned the residence, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi utilized these manholes to take water from the network in containers, though they were actually established for the function of cleaning and maintaining the aqueduct. The cistern he had made to collect rainwater wasn’t adequate to meet his water requirements. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat directly below his residence, and he had a shaft opened to give him access.
The Origins of Contemporary Wall Fountains
The Origins of Contemporary Wall Fountains Himself a highly educated man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of hundreds of ancient documents from their original Greek into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to make it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman tradition of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was revived by Nicholas V.
At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The water which eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain as well as the renown baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona came from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
