Attributes of Garden Statues in Archaic Greece
Attributes of Garden Statues in Archaic Greece The primitive Greeks manufactured the 1st freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and unclothed. In 650 BC, life-sized models of the kouroi began to be seen. Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new types of government, expressions of art, and a greater understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. Notwithstanding, these battles did little to hinder the development of the Greek civilization.

Builders of the First Water Features Water fountain designers were multi-talented people from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century, often serving as architects, sculptors, artisans, engineers and highly educated scholars all in one person. Leonardo da Vinci as a imaginative genius, inventor and scientific expert exemplified this Renaissance creator. He systematically reported his observations in his now famed notebooks about his research into the forces of nature and the qualities and motion of water. Modifying private villa settings into amazing water showcases packed with symbolic significance and natural wonder, early Italian fountain engineers coupled creativity with hydraulic and gardening abilities. The brilliance in Tivoli were provided by the humanist Pirro Ligorio, who was widely known for his capabilities in archeology, architecture and garden design. For the various lands in the vicinity of Florence, other water fountain designers were well versed in humanistic subjects and classical scientific texts, masterminding the phenomenal water marbles, water features and water antics.
