Statuary As a Staple of Vintage Art in Ancient Greece
Statuary As a Staple of Vintage Art in Ancient Greece The first freestanding statuary was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and naked.
The kouroi started to be life-sized commencing in 650 BC. A huge age of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about more forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. Equivalent to other times of historical unrest, disputes were commonplace, and there were battles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Troubles
Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Troubles Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Roma, inhabitants who resided on hills had to journey even further down to gather their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t accessible, people dwelling at greater elevations turned to water taken from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean portions to deliver water to Pincian Hill.
Throughout the length of the aqueduct’s channel were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. While these manholes were created to make it easier to sustain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. He didn’t get enough water from the cistern that he had built on his property to obtain rainwater. To provide himself with a much more practical system to assemble water, he had one of the manholes opened up, offering him access to the aqueduct below his property.
