Back Story of Fountains

Back Story of Fountains The translation of hundreds of classical Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the center of his ambitions. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the behest of the Pope. Building a mostra, an imposing celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had rebuilt.

Acqua Vergine: The Solution to Rome's Water Troubles

Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone techniques around at the time to supply water to areas of high elevation. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by way of the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. Pozzi, or manholes, were constructed at standard intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were provided to make it much easier to protect the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. The cistern he had made to obtain rainwater wasn’t adequate to meet his water demands. To provide himself with a more practical way to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened, giving him access to the aqueduct below his property.

Did You Know How Mechanical Concepts of Water Fountains Became Known?

An internationally recognized innovator in hydraulics in the later part of the 1500's was a French fountain engineer, whose name has been lost to history. His competence in creating landscapes and grottoes with incorporated and brilliant water features began in Italy and with mandates in Brussels, London and Germany. He penned a publication entitled “The Principles of Moving Forces” towards the end of his life while in France that turned into the basic book on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. The book updated key hydraulic breakthroughs since classical antiquity as well as detailing contemporary hydraulic technologies. As a mechanical method to push water, Archimedes made the water screw, fundamental among crucial hydraulic breakthroughs. Natural light heated up the water in two concealed containers next to the decorative water feature were displayed in an illustration. What occurs is the hot liquid expanded, goes up and closes up the pipes leading to the water fountain, consequently leading to stimulation. Concepts for pumps, water wheels, water attributes and garden ponds are also covered in the book.
