Attributes of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece
Archaic Greeks were renowned for providing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and naked. The kouroi became life-sized beginning in 650 BC. A huge time of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about more forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a higher comprehension of people and cultures outside of Greece. Equivalent to many other periods of historical conflict, conflicts were commonplace, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
Anglo Saxon Landscapes During the Norman Conquest
Anglo Saxon Landscapes During the Norman Conquest The introduction of the Normans in the latter half of the 11th century greatly modified The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power.
But there was no time for home life, domestic design, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Castles were more basic designs and often built on blustery hills, where their tenants spent both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were large stone buildings, regularly located in the widest, most fertile hollows. Peaceful pursuits such as gardening were out of place in these desolate citadels. Berkeley Castle is possibly the most complete model in existence today of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time period. A spacious terrace recommended for walking and as a means to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs around the building. A scenic bowling green, enveloped in grass and bordered by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.
