The Godfather Of Rome's Outdoor Fountains
The Godfather Of Rome's Outdoor Fountains There are numerous celebrated water fountains in the city center of Rome. One of the most distinguished sculptors and artists of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini planned, conceptualized and constructed almost all of them. Marks of his life's work are apparent throughout the avenues of Rome simply because, in addition to his abilities as a water fountain designer, he was also a city architect. Bernini's father, a recognized Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they eventually relocated in Rome, to thoroughly exhibit their artwork in the form of public water fountains and water features. The young Bernini received compliments from Popes and relevant artists alike, and was an diligent employee. At the start he was known for his sculptural skills. He used his knowledge and melded it seamlessly with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most profound impact on him, both personally and professionally.

Aqueducts: The Remedy to Rome's Water Problems
Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, inhabitants living at higher elevations had to depend on local streams for their water. During this period, there were only two other technologies capable of providing water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. In the early sixteenth century, the city began to utilize the water that flowed underground through Acqua Vergine to furnish drinking water to Pincian Hill. Spanning the length of the aqueduct’s route were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. While these manholes were manufactured to make it easier to maintain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to fulfill his needs. By using an orifice to the aqueduct that ran underneath his property, he was able to meet his water needs.
