Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, residents living at higher elevations had to rely on natural springs for their water. If people residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to be dependent on the other existing techniques of the time, cisterns that compiled rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that drew the water from below ground. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it easier to maintain the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was carried out by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. The cistern he had made to collect rainwater wasn’t satisfactory to meet his water demands. Via an orifice to the aqueduct that flowed below his property, he was in a position to reach his water needs.
