Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were designed to look rigid and always had foot in front; the males were healthy, robust, and naked. The kouroi grew to be life-sized starting in 650 BC. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they progressed into more refined forms of federal government and art, and gained more information about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. However, these conflicts did little to hinder the progression of the Greek civilization.

The book, “The Principles of Moving Forces,” authored near the end of his life in France, became the fundamental writing on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Replacing vital hydraulic advancements of classical antiquity, the publication also highlights contemporary hydraulic technologies. Notable among these works were those of Archimedes, the developer of the water screw, a mechanical means of moving water. An decorative water feature with sunlight heating the water in two containers concealed in an neighboring room was presented in one illustration.
