Aspects of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece
Aspects of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were known for creating the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and desirable male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male figurines were always undressed, with a strong, powerful build. In 650 BC, life-sized variations of the kouroi began to be observed. A huge period of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about new forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a greater appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. Still these disputes did not prohibit the emergence of the Greek civilization. {
Anglo Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest
Anglo Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest The Anglo-Saxon way of life was drastically changed by the appearance of the Normans in the later eleventh century. The Normans were better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power.
Still, home life, household architecture, and decoration were out of the question until the Normans taken over the entire population. Monasteries and castles served separate purposes, so while monasteries were large stone structures built in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on learning offensive and defensive techniques. The calm practice of gardening was unrealistic in these dreary bastions. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is represented in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most untouched sample we have. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to attackers intending to dig under the castle walls. On 1 of these terraces sits a quaint bowling green: it is covered in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is created into the shape of rough ramparts.
