From Where Did Water Features Originate?
From Where Did Water Features Originate? Hundreds of classic Greek records were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455.
He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the model seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The historical Roman custom of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
Bernini’s Very First Italian Water Fountains
Bernini’s Very First Italian Water Fountains Bernini's earliest fountain, named Barcaccia, is a breath taking work of art found at the bottom of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. Roman residents and site seers who enjoy verbal exchanges as well as being the company of others still flood this spot. The streets neighboring his fountain have come to be one of the city’s most trendy gathering places, something which would certainly have pleased Bernini himself. The master's very first fountain of his career was built at around 1630 at the request of Pope Urbano VIII. The fountain’s central motif is based on an enormous boat slowly sinking into the Mediterranean Sea.
The great 16th century flooding of the Tevere, which left the entire region inundated with water, was memorialized by the water fountain according to writings from the period. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a lengthy time period, in 1665 Bernini voyaged to France.
