Rome’s Early Water Transport Solutions Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in Roma, citizens who dwelled on hills had to journey even further down to get their water from natural sources. If citizens residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to be dependent on the remaining existing technologies of the time, cisterns that accumulated rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from under ground. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill through the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. While these manholes were developed to make it much easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was carried out by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t sufficient to satisfy his needs. To provide himself with a much more efficient means to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened, giving him access to the aqueduct below his residence.

The published papers and illustrated books of the day contributed to the development of scientific technology, and were the primary methods of dissiminating useful hydraulic concepts and water feature suggestions all through Europe. In the late 1500's, a French fountain developer (whose name has been lost) was the internationally recognized hydraulics leader. By designing gardens and grottoes with integrated and ingenious water features, he began his career in Italy by getting imperial mandates in Brussels, London and Germany. “The Principles of Moving Forces”, a publication which became the fundamental text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering, was composed by him towards the end of his life in France. Replacing key hydraulic findings of classical antiquity, the publication also explains modern hydraulic technologies. Archimedes, the creator of the water screw, had his work highlighted and these integrated a mechanical way to move water. An beautiful water feature with sunlight heating up the liquid in two containers hidden in a nearby area was presented in one illustration. The hot water expands and subsequently rises and shuts the pipes thereby activating the water fountain.
