Rome’s Early Water Delivery Systems With the building of the 1st elevated aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, folks who lived on the city’s foothills no longer had to rely entirely on naturally-occurring spring water for their demands. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole technologies available at the time to supply water to spots of high elevation. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill through the underground channel of Acqua Vergine.
During its original building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were added at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were manufactured to make it easier to conserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had manufactured on his residential property to gather rainwater. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his residential property.
