A Short History of Early Garden Fountains
A Short History of Early Garden Fountains
Towns and communities relied on practical water fountains to channel water for preparing food, washing, and cleaning up from local sources like lakes, streams, or creeks. To produce water flow through a fountain until the end of the 1800’s, and produce a jet of water, mandated the force of gravity and a water source such as a spring or reservoir, located higher than the fountain. The appeal and wonder of fountains make them appropriate for traditional monuments. The contemporary fountains of modern times bear little similarity to the first water fountains. Simple stone basins created from nearby material were the first fountains, used for religious functions and drinking water. 2,000 B.C. is when the earliest known stone fountain basins were used. The spraying of water appearing from small spouts was pressured by gravity, the lone power source creators had in those days. Located near reservoirs or springs, the functional public water fountains supplied the local citizens with fresh drinking water. Fountains with elaborate decoration started to show up in Rome in about 6 B.C., commonly gods and creatures, made with natural stone or bronze. A well-designed collection of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public water fountains supplied with fresh water.

The Defining Characteristics of Ancient Greek Sculpture
The Defining Characteristics of Ancient Greek Sculpture
The primitive Greeks developed the 1st freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Younger, ideal male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the statues, or kouros figures. Thought of by Greeks to represent skin care, the kouroi were formed into rigid, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, well-developed, and fit. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an extraordinary point of transformation for the Greeks as they extended into new modes of government, formed novel expressions of art, and achieved insights of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. And yet these disputes did not prevent the emergence of the Greek civilization. {
