Contemporary Garden Decoration: Garden Fountains and their Roots
From the onset, outdoor fountains were soley meant to serve as functional elements. Residents of urban areas, townships and small towns used them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash, which meant that fountains needed to be linked to nearby aqueduct or spring. Up until the 19th century, fountains had to be higher and closer to a water supply, including aqueducts and reservoirs, in order to benefit from gravity which fed the fountains. Fountains were an excellent source of water, and also served to adorn living areas and celebrate the artist. Roman fountains usually depicted images of animals or heroes made of bronze or stone masks. Throughout the Middle Ages, Muslim and Moorish garden planners incorporated fountains to create mini depictions of the gardens of paradise. Fountains played a significant role in the Gardens of Versailles, all part of French King Louis XIV’s desire to exercise his power over nature. The Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries were extolled with baroque style fountains built to mark the place of entry of Roman aqueducts.
Since indoor plumbing became the norm of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely decorative. Fountains using mechanical pumps instead of gravity allowed fountains to deliver recycled water into living spaces as well as create special water effects.
Modern-day fountains function mostly as decoration for public spaces, to honor individuals or events, and compliment entertainment and recreational activities.

The One Cleaning Solution to NEVER Use On Your Wall fountains
The One Cleaning Solution to NEVER Use On Your Wall fountains Proper care and regular maintenance are important to the longevity of water fountains. It is easy for foreign objects to find their way into open-air fountains, so keeping it clean is important.
Every three-four months, garden fountains should have a good cleaning. Prior to cleaning, all of the water must be removed. Then use a soft towel and mild cleanser to scrub the inside. A helpful tip is to use a toothbrush if there are little hard-to-reach spots. Make sure all the soap is properly washed off.
Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and scrubbing the inside thoroughly. Soaking it in vinegar for a time will make it easier to wash. If you want to remove build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any components that might stick to the inside of the pump.
And finally, make sure the water level is consistently full in order to keep your fountain running optimally. Allowing the water level to get too low can cause damage to the pump - and you certainly don't want that!
