"Primitive" Greek Art: Outdoor Statuary
"Primitive" Greek Art: Outdoor Statuary Archaic Greeks were well known for creating the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, sculptures of adolescent, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. The kouroi, regarded by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male statues were always unclothed, with a powerful, sturdy physique. The kouroi started to be life-sized commencing in 650 BC.
