Archaic Greeks were well known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to appear stiff and always had foot forward; the males were vigorous, powerful, and naked. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a deeper understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are examples of the types of battles that emerged frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
