Anglo Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Anglo Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons encountered incredible changes to their daily lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. Architecture and gardening were attributes that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But yet there was no time for home life, domestic design, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole realm. Because of this, castles were cruder structures than monasteries: Monasteries were usually important stone buildings located in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were built on windy crests where their residents devoted time and space to projects for offense and defense. The tranquil practice of gardening was not viable in these dismal bastions. Berkeley Castle is perhaps the most complete model in existence today of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is rumored to have been invented during the time of William the Conqueror. A large terrace intended for walking and as a way to stop enemies from mining below the walls runs about the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge trimmed into the form of crude battlements.
Builders of the First Water Features
Builders of the First Water Features Commonly working as architects, sculptors, designers, engineers and discerning scholars, all in one, fountain creators were multi-talented individuals from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century.
Leonardo da Vinci, a Renaissance artist, was renowned as a creative genius, inventor and scientific virtuoso. He carefully recorded his examinations in his now famed notebooks about his studies into the forces of nature and the attributes and mobility of water. Innovative water exhibits full of symbolic significance and all-natural beauty converted private villa settings when early Italian water feature creators coupled imagination with hydraulic and landscaping expertise. The humanist Pirro Ligorio brought the vision behind the splendors in Tivoli and was celebrated for his virtuosity in archeology, architecture and garden design. Other fountain designers, masterminding the fantastic water marbles, water attributes and water jokes for the many mansions near Florence, were well-versed in humanistic subjects and classical scientific readings.
