Bernini: The Master of Italy's Greatest Fountains
Bernini: The Master of Italy's Greatest Fountains Bernini's earliest water fountain, named Barcaccia, is a masterful work of art found at the foot of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, this area is filled with Roman locals and travelers alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company.
One of the city’s most stylish meeting places are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would undoubtedly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII commissioned what was to be the earliest water fountain of the artist's career. The fountain’s central motif is based on a massive boat slowly sinking into the Mediterranean. According to 16th century texts, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was memorialized by the eye-catching fountain. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a lengthy time period, in 1665 Bernini traveled to France.

Frequently serving as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and discerning scholars, all in one, fountain designers were multi-talented individuals from the 16th to the late 18th century. Leonardo da Vinci as a inspired intellect, inventor and scientific expert exemplified this Renaissance artist. He carefully documented his ideas in his now renowned notebooks, after his mind boggling interest in the forces of nature led him to explore the qualities and motion of water. Combining inventiveness with hydraulic and horticultural expertise, early Italian fountain designers changed private villa settings into ingenious water displays loaded with emblematic meaning and natural elegance. Known for his incredible skill in archeology, design and garden creations, Pirro Ligorio, the humanist, delivered the vision behind the wonders in Tivoli. Well versed in humanist subject areas as well as ancient scientific readings, other water feature designers were masterminding the fascinating water marbles, water functions and water jokes for the numerous estates near Florence.
