Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the finest sculptors and artists of the 17th century designed, created and built virtually all of them. Traces of his life's efforts are obvious throughout the streets of Rome simply because, in addition to his capabilities as a water feature creator, he was also a city architect. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, guided his young son, and they eventually settled in Rome, to fully express their artwork in the form of public water fountains and water features. The young Bernini received compliments from Popes and relevant artists alike, and was an excellent worker. Initially he was celebrated for his sculpting skills. Working effortlessly with Roman marble, he made use of a base of knowledge in the ancient Greek architecture, most obviously in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most serious effect on him, both personally and professionally.
